Statistics and Progress

How many items the MDR describes – and how the collection has grown. What each figure means is explained below.

What do these figures mean?
Datasets
The self-contained vocabularies the MDR is divided into – listed on the left of the front page. Example: “Covid Data” and “Pathogen Data” from the ZBR group, “DZG Core Dataset” from the other datasets.
Data elements
An item that can actually be collected in a study – a field on the case report form. Counted are entries carrying both a code and a data type. Example: SMOKING_STATUS “Smoking Status”, data type categorical. A field that receives a value.
Catalogue values
The predefined answer options within such a field. They carry a code but no data type – they collect nothing themselves, they are the choice. Example: “Smoking Status” offers SMOKING_STATUS:SMO (smoker), :NEV (never smoked) and :EX (ex-smoker) – three catalogue values for one data element.
Concepts
All entries together: data elements, catalogue values and the structural nodes that collect nothing but organise the tree. Example: “Diseases” in the DZG Core Dataset or “TX – General Data” are such folders – they appear here only, not among the data elements.
Triples
The technical size of the database, not a subject-matter figure. A triple is a single statement in three parts: subject – property – value. Every entry consists of many of them. Example: SMOKING_STATUShas label – “Smoking Status”. The German name, the English one, the code and the data type already make four triples.

Data elements, catalogue values and structural nodes add up to the number of concepts.
